successful projects of 2009

Over the course of 2009 the LCP-region 171 have provided events that encouraged thought in students in regards to career exploration. The events were a huge success with positive feedback being received from the majority of the participants.

Careers Carousel

We held three careers carousels in 2009, one in each term with the exception of fourth term. The average attendance for the carousels was approximately 60 students. Students were able to select three out of six industry speakers to learn more about what it is like to work in that industry.

A Careers Carousel-how to guide was developed to assist schools and community based organisations plan their own version of the careers carousel. All schools in the Fremantle/Melville district have received a copy of the guide, if you would like to receive a copy please contact Chris (LCP Coordinator) at Bridging The Gap on 9434 6575

Bus Tour for Parents

A successful bus tour for parents was held in September 2009. Parents were provided with practical knowledge of industry that would allow them to provide more career development support to their children. The first component of the bus tour was a visit to Austal Ships, the parents were guided through the workshops and witnessed ships in varying stages of development while learning of the trades that are involved in the industry. The second component was a tour of the Fremantle prison to prepare the parents for the final component which was a presentation from the Department of Corrective Services on careers within the department. Parents were able to gain additional advice and support during the tour from a number of youth specialists from the Department of Education and Training and Challenger TAFE.

A Bus Tour for Parents-how to guide was developed to assist schools and organisations to develop their own version, this was sent to all schools in the Fremantle/Melville region, select schools from the Rockingham/Kwinana area and a variety of community based organisations. If you would like to receive a copy please contact Chris (LCP Coordinator) at Bridging The Gap on 9434 6575.

Abilities Pathways Program

The LCP coordinated the Abilities Pathways Program (Transboomers). This program allowed students with disabilities to gain a certificate I in Transport and Logistics and practical experience in the industry by work placement. Twenty students attended the program in 2009 with only a few not completing the full certificate.

For further information on how the Abilities Pathways Program works or to register your interest, please contact Chris at Bridging The Gap on 9434 6575.

Zoo visit

In early December we coordinated a visit to the Perth Zoo with the Aboriginal students from Willeton Senior High School. The visit included the students entering and working in the Tortoise enclosure and speaking to the keeper about what is involved in working at the zoo. Students participated in a problem solving activity that educated them on issues relating to biodiversity.
